SPECIALLY-ABLED YET INDEPENDENT I am from Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, and this is my story. I have worked in the Merchant Navy as an officer since 2006, but I met with an accident in 2013 that led to a spinal cord injury due to which I was left paralysed from the chest down. I can not move because I do not feel any sensation and strength in the lower part of my body. I have been in a wheelchair for more than nine years now. The Journey Because of my sedentary lifestyle and lack of proper guidance to maintain my health, I couldn’t even get up to weigh myself on a weighing machine. So it posed a great challenge for me to deal with all this. But when I met my mentor for the first time and visited the nutrition centre, listening to their stories and the fact that Herbalife is the No.1 in the world in meal replacement & protein supplement combined*, I was totally in for it. By March 2021, I was almost back to my ideal weight. Helping out others is where I found my calling After my accident, I started my own bakery business from home in 2014. However, after realising how nutrition has changed my life for good, I decided to help others too. So in May 2021, I let go of my shop and dedicated myself towards drawing people into nutrition. When a person in a wheelchair like me can do it, I am sure there’s hope for others too. Before my accident, I used to do rigorous workouts but could never reach my ideal weight. Only because I didn’t know the correct way to manage my health with the best nutrition. All these things changed when I learned from my mentor and took an active interest in nutrition. In fact, my income significantly improved too. Currently, I am at Active World Team level. I have my own nutrition club. Today, my whole family is also a part of this nutrition club. Ever since I have been associated with Herbalife Nutrition, I have made several friends and connections. The best part is that I am independent while in a wheelchair and have the ability to guide and help out others. I have not missed any training till now. I’ve always listened to my mentors due to which I have landed where I am now.

PREFERRED CUSTOMER STORY

HERE’S HER STORY

I joined Herbalife Nutrition around April when I used to weigh 78 kg. Because of my weight, I faced many issues such as walking, exercising, and more. After joining Herbalife Nutrition, with the help of their products, I lost 17 kgs. My mentor - Hutaib also guided me very well in this weight loss journey. I consume Afresh energy drink mix that helps me feel energetic and Formula 1 Nutritional shakes Mix by Herbalife Nutrition, which helps manage my weight. Since I work in IT, I have to stay up late at night for work. Due to this, I used to feel lethargic all the time and it was tough for me to keep up at work but after consuming Herbalife Nutrition products, things started to change for the better. I keep suggesting other people including my family to try out Herbalife Nutrition products. My mother has already lost considerable weight after taking Herbalife Nutrition products. My brother who was underweight has now achieved his optimal weight with proper nutrition. I am thankful to Herbalife Nutrition and my mentor - Hutaib for helping me and my family change our lifestyle for the better. And I would recommend everyone to give Herbalife Nutrition a try.

Make your food count with nutrient dense food

Fill your diet with Nutrient Dense Foods We spend very few mindful moments in our fast-paced lives on our food choices. Most of the common foods like fried snacks, soft drinks etc. are nutritionally imbalanced – they are dense in calories and lack key nutrients. This makes getting the right nutrients in sufficient quantities through diet a challenge. Also with advancing age, the ability of a body to absorb and utilize many nutrients becomes less efficient than it once did. Also, as we age our body needs fewer calories. Thus, irrespective of age, we need to choose nutrient-dense foods over calorie-dense foods to make our food count. 4

So, what is Nutrient Density? It is the measure of the nutrient content of foods, expressed per reference amount, typically 100 kcal, 100 g, or per serving. 1

What are nutrient-dense foods? Nutrient-dense foods are rich in vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients important for health, with relatively lower calories. Some nutrient-dense foods are fruits, vegetables, whole grains, non-fat and low-fat dairy, fish and seafood, unprocessed lean meat and skinless poultry, nuts and legumes. 2

Why does Nutrient density matter? Nutrient-dense foods help us fill the gaps in case you are not eating enough healthy food/diet. By including nutrient-dense foods in our diets, we can increase the amount of nutrition per calorie. When choosing between two food items with the same calorie amount, one food choice can provide the body with the protein, fiber, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals we need every day, while another choice may provide empty calories from sugar and saturated fat with no other significant nutrients. 3

UNDERSTANDING POPULAR DIET TRENDS

Every year, it seems, there’s a new diet trend. Some of these fads come and go, while others – like the low-carb diet first made popular decades ago – seem to have staying power. Calorie counting has taken the lead as the most common eating pattern, following clean eating, intermittent fasting, and low-carb dieting. The ketogenic (keto) diet, carb-cycling, and gluten-free diet are popular diets.

Image is for representation purpose only.

05

WHY DO PEOPLE TURN TO DIETS? There are certainly good diets and bad diets – we all know people who choose foods carefully and eat well, just as we know others who seem to eat nothing but fast foods and soda. And, if you need to lose weight, then “dieting” – in the most general sense – is probably a good thing as long as your plan is one you can stick with, is well-balanced, and leads to a healthy rate of weight loss. Calorie Counting Counting calories can be a great tool when you’re trying to control your weight, but accurately counting them takes a lot of practice and an understanding of where things can go wrong. The term “garbage in, garbage out” certainly applies here. If you don’t record everything you eat and drink, and record the portions properly, your numbers could be way off. Ketogenic & High-Fat Diets Rapid weight loss, increased energy, and muscle building are the claims of the ketogenic diet (also known as the keto diet). This high-fat and very low-carbohydrate diet encourages you to eat meat, fish, poultry, and fats, while restricting fruits, vegetables, dairy, grains, beans, and legumes. The primary problem with the ketogenic diet is that it is very unbalanced, with a recommended intake of up to 70 percent of calories from fat, and carbs are limited to as low as 5 percent of calories. Without adequate carbs, the body runs on ketones (by-products of the body) for fuel (a condition known as ketosis). Intermittent Fasting Many diets focus on what to eat, but intermittent fasting is all about when you eat. Intermittent fasting has several variations, but the most popular form is one in which all your food for the day is consumed within an 8-hour window while you fast for the remaining 16 hours. Your body relies primarily on glucose for energy – which is derived primarily from the carbohydrates that you eat and is available from circulating glucose in the bloodstream as well as stores in your liver and muscles. When available glucose supplies decline – such as after many hours without food – your body undergoes metabolic switching and starts burning fat. HERE ARE THIS YEAR’S MOST POPULAR DIET TRENDS & EATING PATTERNS

The Paleo Diet Often referred to as the “caveman diet,” the paleo diet includes foods believed to closely match those eaten by our hunter-gatherer ancestors, and which many believe is more aligned with our genetic makeup. This eating pattern is high in protein (meats and eggs), vegetables, nuts, and seeds. Restricted foods include grains, legumes, potatoes, and dairy. As a result, this diet may be inadequate in carbohydrates and fibre, and also lack calcium. On the positive side, however, the diet advises limiting refined sugars and heavily processed foods. Carb-Cycling Carb cycling is sort of a hybrid of a low-carbohydrate diet and intermittent fasting. The idea is that you adjust your carbohydrate intake to your needs for a particular period of time – which can be as often as every day – so that you essentially take in more carbs when needs are high and cut back when you need less. So, in essence, there are days when you “feast” on carbohydrates, and those when you “fast.” Gluten-Free Diet Gluten-free is a must for those who have celiac disease or those who have gluten sensitivity. Restricted foods are those made with wheat, rye, and barley which may include other non-starchy foods such as beer, processed meats, and condiments. Nutrition is complex and personal, and people respond differently to different diets. But what’s important is to make balanced, healthy nutrition a sustainable habit. In order to strive for that

balance, try to incorporate nutrient-dense foods – those that provide an abundance of nutrients such as proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals — relative to their calorie cost.

WELLNESS A PERSONALISED,

FOOD-FIRST APPROACH

The word Ayurveda comprises two concepts – Ayu meaning Life and Veda meaning Knowledge and through these, it presents a holistic framework for health. This holistic health framework considers multidimensional aspects of wellness or Swasthya. Sushruta defines seven dimensions of wellness – balanced bioregulatory mechanisms (Doshas), balanced structural elements of the body (Dhatus), balanced digestive & metabolic transformations (Agni), a well-functioning excretory system, and three pleasant dispositions, those of the senses (Indriya), soul (Atma) & (mind) mana. Disturbances to these balances lead to the generation of Ama or toxins within the body and the accumulation of ama is eventually expressed as disease. The holistic framework covers principles and practices involving Ahaar (diet), Vihara (lifestyle) & Aushadh (supplements, tonic & medicinal formulations) for the prevention of ama accumulation with an emphasis on food first solutions– if food is right, no medicine is needed. While classical nutrition theory emphasises what to eat and equates food chemistry to body chemistry as a guiding principle for the right food, the algorithm of Ayurveda nutrition theory is built on the foundation of how & when to eat and only then layered with what to eat. These are addressed through the centrality of Agni, the post-prandial digestive & metabolic power of the body, that results in the assimilation of food into tissues and waste for excretion. The Agni or the transformative power is not a constant but varies with the time of the day, with the seasons, and with age. Food should be consumed when the body’s transformative powers (Agni) are optimal. Two defining characteristics of a diet aligned with Agni, and through its wellness, are moderation & personalisation ‘Mita’ and ‘Hita’. A Hita diet is personalised for the individual – tasteful & suited to one's Prakriti. This personalisation is done per 3 natural rhythms – that of the day (Dinacharya), that of the season (Ritucharya), and that of the life stage. These algorithms of Aahar in Ayurveda help in creating a personalised dynamic regimen for healthy life, longevity, and sustained happiness.

Dry, dehydrated skin can happen anytime during the year, but especially when the weather shifts. As many parts of the world start to feel the chill in the air with the change of seasons, many of us are also starting to see changes in our skin. During cooler months, there is less moisture in the air outside, and indoor heating systems can also be dehydrating to the skin. That combination of temperature extremes might make your skin feel dry, itchy, and uncomfortable. It’s important to keep our skin healthy throughout the year.

AYURVEDIC NUTRITION A NEW HORIZON Ayurveda and Immunity: Ayurveda mentions “Vyadhikshamatva” as concept of immunity which means the factor which limits the pathogenesis and opposes the strength of disease 2 .This depends on various factors like active lifestyle, food habits and best nutrition. Thus, Ayurveda emphasizes promotion of health through strengthening of host defenses using Rasayana (rejuvenation), against day-to-day physiological extremes as well as opportunistic maladies.

Ayurveda is a 5000-year-old life science that has originated and evolved in India 1 . The authoritative texts encompass not only the medical science for treating disease but also the principles of leading a healthy and happy life. These principles involve the daily and seasonal regimen, wholesome and unwholesome foods, nutritional requirements in different stages of life, functional and targeted nutrition to prevent lifestyle ailments, nutrition for mental health and also focuses on personalized nutrition.

Why do we need specialty botanicals or plant (phyto)based products to benefit immunity?

Apart from essential nutrients like vitamins C, A, E, B6, B12 and minerals like iron and zinc, specialty botanicals and plant-based food are an integral part of our daily nutrition. Some herbs have been identified as important for daily maintenance of immune system and classified as immunotonics, which include immunostimulants, immunomodulators or immunoadjuvants. The experimental research reports suggest that certain phytoconstituents and phytochemicals have the intrinsic ability to maintain better health by boosting the immune system, reducing inflammation and allergies as well as detoxifying contaminants, pollutants and activating enzymes that unbridled cell division. 3

13

Do we need plant-based Immunity supplements daily?

Do we need Nootropic herbs daily?

Several factors like sleep, diet, stress, and hygiene can affect the immune system's performance, and any offsets in these behaviors can cause havoc on immune function. Often the impact of these factors goes unnoticed, but if you tend to get sick after a big project at work or during sport, it's likely because your immune system has suffered due to stress, lack of sleep, binge eating or unhygienic behaviors 4 . Currently, individuals with contemporary eating patterns may remain deficient in the essential nutrients needed for optimal health, and herbs and spices can provide substantial benefits to overall nutrition due to their high concentration of phytonutrients and other bioactive compounds. 5 Ayurveda and Mental Health: The perfect balance of mind, body and soul is considered as complete health in Ayurveda. Manas or the physical mind is directly connected to Dhi (intellect), Dhruti (processing information) and Smruti (memory). Mental health is enhanced by” Medhya Rasayana” (Nootropic herbs). Medha means intellect and/or retention and Rasayana means herbs, herbal recipes, or a procedure that on regular practice will boost nourishment, health, memory, intellect, immunity and hence longevity. 6

Everyone hopes to - not just living long but living well. This is particularly true when it comes to brain health. We all wish to maintain our cognitive abilities throughout our lives. The Nootropic herbal supplements like Brahmi 8 can be one of the best choices. Brahmi (Bacomind 9 ) in vritilife Brain health is extensively researched for its functional benefits for a healthy brain and supported by several clinical studies. It is a fuel for Brain performance - learning, memory, focus, accuracy, concentration. 10 Plants and humans have a vital relationship. There are over 25,000 phytonutrients from different phytochemical classes, e.g., anthocyanins, carotenoids, coumarins, flavonoids, lignans, phenolic acids, polyphenols, sterols, and terpenes, which have been found in plant foods 11 .vritilife Ayurvedic nutrition has a vision like the ancient science of Ayurveda that aims to preserve health and wellness by emphasizing on plant or Phyto nutrition as daily supplements.

What are Nootropic herbs and why do we need them?

Nootropics are substances that enhance cognition and memory and facilitates learning 7 . Due to everyday endless stressed schedule from upskills to soft skills, meetings, phone calls, Emails, traffic, meeting different people, reaching tasks, work-life balance, maintaining relations. Overthinking of all these itself would be irresistible. Amidst all these we still need to keep up the sense of balance. Nootropics may be the answer.

4 HEALTH BENEFITS OF HIKING AND EXERCISING OUTDOORS

Our world has changed dramatically since the pandemic, and many people are getting more isolated. Working from home has become the norm for many, and social media, email, and the general 24/7 noise of life can make us stay stressed. Disconnecting from technology and reconnecting with nature gives our brains a much-needed recharge. Hiking is a great way to get fresh air, especially if you live in urban areas. Several studies indicate there are real benefits to getting outdoors to hike for overall health.
