WELLNESS A PERSONALISED,
FOOD-FIRST APPROACH
The word Ayurveda comprises two concepts – Ayu meaning Life and Veda meaning Knowledge and through these, it presents a holistic framework for health. This holistic health framework considers multidimensional aspects of wellness or Swasthya. Sushruta defines seven dimensions of wellness – balanced bioregulatory mechanisms (Doshas), balanced structural elements of the body (Dhatus), balanced digestive & metabolic transformations (Agni), a well-functioning excretory system, and three pleasant dispositions, those of the senses (Indriya), soul (Atma) & (mind) mana. Disturbances to these balances lead to the generation of Ama or toxins within the body and the accumulation of ama is eventually expressed as disease. The holistic framework covers principles and practices involving Ahaar (diet), Vihara (lifestyle) & Aushadh (supplements, tonic & medicinal formulations) for the prevention of ama accumulation with an emphasis on food first solutions– if food is right, no medicine is needed. While classical nutrition theory emphasises what to eat and equates food chemistry to body chemistry as a guiding principle for the right food, the algorithm of Ayurveda nutrition theory is built on the foundation of how & when to eat and only then layered with what to eat. These are addressed through the centrality of Agni, the post-prandial digestive & metabolic power of the body, that results in the assimilation of food into tissues and waste for excretion. The Agni or the transformative power is not a constant but varies with the time of the day, with the seasons, and with age. Food should be consumed when the body’s transformative powers (Agni) are optimal. Two defining characteristics of a diet aligned with Agni, and through its wellness, are moderation & personalisation ‘Mita’ and ‘Hita’. A Hita diet is personalised for the individual – tasteful & suited to one's Prakriti. This personalisation is done per 3 natural rhythms – that of the day (Dinacharya), that of the season (Ritucharya), and that of the life stage. These algorithms of Aahar in Ayurveda help in creating a personalised dynamic regimen for healthy life, longevity, and sustained happiness.
